At the African Maritime Security Institute (AMSI), we are dedicated to enhancing maritime security, promoting international maritime law, and ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources across Africa.

We believe that secure and well-managed oceans are essential for economic growth, environmental protection, and regional stability. Our mission is to provide world-class training, foster regional cooperation, and enhance law enforcement capabilities to create a safer and more sustainable maritime environment.

Our Vision

AMSI seeks to bridge the capacity gaps in Africa's maritime domain. We have established partnerships with African governments, international organizations, private sector entities, regional economic communities (RECs), and multilateral institutions. Our team of experts comprises esteemed fellows from prestigious global maritime fellowships.

Objectives

✔ Promote Maritime Security and Blue Economy – Prevent piracy, terrorism, and other illicit activities while promoting sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation.
✔ Foster Sustainable Ocean Governance – Build capacity and promote cooperation among African states to address maritime security challenges and promote sustainable ocean governance.
✔ Provide Specialized Training and Research – Offer capacity-building programs, research outcomes, and advisory services to support African states in developing their maritime security and ocean governance capabilities.
✔ Combat Maritime Crimes – Prevent and suppress maritime crimes, including illegal migration, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.
✔ Facilitate Technical Assistance – Support coastal states in making and defending submissions before the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS).

Our Approach

We promote effective ocean governance and implementation of international agreements, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the BBNJ Agreement. We enhance security, rule of law, and blue economy initiatives in Africa's maritime domain. We foster sustainable utilization of marine resources and protection of the marine environment.

AMSI provides comprehensive certification courses in international maritime law, security, and ocean governance, with a focus on the unique challenges faced by Africa. Our courses are designed to enhance capacity building in Africa's maritime domain.
